Description

A gentle circular walk starting outside the Crown Inn at Humshaugh (https://www.crownhumshaugh.co.uk/) on another gorgeous summers day. For the first half of the walk we mainly used the minor, and light traffic, roads. There is a public footpath (528/005) that we could have used, but in this case we continued along the road, chatting to various locals and holiday makers. At the most Northerly part of the route we diverted off to the right to take in the views of Haughton Castle, a privately owned dwelling (see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haughton_Castle for more information).

A brief visit to Boat House saw us searching for the old river crossing but, alas, no boat was in operation that day! After a brief stop to chat to visitors to the area, we retraced our steps to the road and turned right, continuing along the road to Keepershield. At Keepershield we briefly had to walk alongside a busy main road, but this was only for about 100 yds, before turning left on the public bridleway (528/003). This took us across open fields passing both sheep and herds of cows, but on a very pleasant and scenic route. Haughton Pasture Cottage is a quaint “off grid” property that you pass just to the south of. We continued to follow the path to a small footbridge across the Humshaugh Burn. After this we joined Burn Lane in Humshaugh Village itself before finally arriving at the pub just in time for lunch at 1pm. We were afforded a friendly welcome and consumed some good cuisine at reasonable prices.
